THE BELL HOUSE AND DRUM HOUSE

Located symmetrically on either side of the Thái Học area at Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám, the Bell House and Drum House are architectural structures deeply imbued with traditional Vietnamese design, contributing to the cultural and educational landscape of the heritage site.

Both structures were constructed in 1999, along with the Thái Học area, on the former grounds of the ancient Quốc Tử Giám. Although designed in the spirit of traditional national architecture, the present buildings are not exact replicas of historical models; instead, they were adapted to serve contemporary functions and the monument's landscape.

The Bell House and Drum House feature traditional wooden structures, gracefully curved roof corners, and roofs covered with traditional shoe-tip tiles, creating an appearance that is both solemn and elegant. Though built as separate structures, they form a harmonious and balanced composition within the overall layout of the Thái Học area.

The bronze bell housed in the Bell House stands 2.34 meters high and weighs approximately 700 kilograms. The Thunder Drum displayed in the Drum House measures 2.65 meters in height, with a drumhead diameter of 2.01 meters. It was crafted by artisans from the Đọi Tam traditional craft village (Hà Nam Province) on the occasion of the 990th anniversary of Thăng Long - Hanoi. The drumhead is covered with buffalo hide, producing a powerful resonant sound like thunder, hence the name "Thunder Drum."

Beyond their architectural and artistic value, the sound of the bell and drum evokes the atmosphere of learning and ceremonial practices once associated with Quốc Tử Giám, while continuing the thousand-year educational and cultural legacy of Thăng Long - Hanoi.
