Nhà Tiền Đường, Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám

On the evening of October 3, 2026, the second edition of the “Sắc Tâm 2026” exhibition officially opened at Tiền Đường Hall, Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám. Under the theme “Sắc – Hương – Tâm” (Color – Fragrance – Spirit), the exhibition brings together contemporary lacquer art, agarwood culture, and a historic heritage setting, where traditional values find new expression through the artistic language of today.

The exhibition is jointly organized by the Center for Scientific and Cultural Activities of Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám, Nguyen Art Gallery, and Trầm Tuệ to commemorate the 950th anniversary of the founding of Quốc Tử Giám (1076–2026). It also offers the public an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of knowledge, culture, and values passed down through generations, while exploring how heritage continues to find expression in contemporary art.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Hoàng Văn Hưởng, Founder of Trầm Tuệ; Mr. Lê Xuân Hưởng, Founder of Nguyen Art Gallery; Mr. Nguyễn Phú Bình, Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam; H.E. Kohdayar Marri, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Vietnam; and Mr. Lê Xuân Kiêu, Director of the Center for Scientific and Cultural Activities of Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám. Also in attendance were representatives of the organizing institutions, painters, artists, collectors, art enthusiasts, and members of the public.

The exhibition brings together 19 artists representing a diverse range of styles and artistic approaches, including Đỗ Khải, Triệu Khắc Tiến, Lương Duy, and Tuấn Cường. Spanning expressionist, realist, and abstract styles, the 26 works reflect each artist's distinctive creative vision, with most drawing inspiration from Hanoi's cultural heritage. Featured works include Khởi Nguyên, Hồn Xưa, Lối Cũ, Liên Hoa Cổ Tự, Hòa Phong Tháp Cổ, Văn Miếu Môn, Hoa Nở Nơi Bảng Vàng, Vạn Thế Sư Biểu Đạo Học, and Khí Vụ Khuê Văn.

What unites these works is a shared commitment to renewing traditional Vietnamese lacquer craftsmanship. Through the meticulous application, curing, and polishing of successive layers of lacquer on prepared surfaces, the artists create remarkable visual depth while exploring new possibilities through contemporary artistic expression.

If lacquer art preserves beauty through color and agarwood evokes emotion through fragrance, then the spirit is where these values converge. Visitors can admire the rich colors, textures, and intricate forms of 14 agarwood artworks presented by Trầm Tuệ, including Vân Du, Bách Phong, Bồ Tát Quan Thế Âm, and Viên Sơn. Surrounded by the delicate fragrance of agarwood, visitors are invited to pause, reflect, and enjoy a moment of tranquility amid the rhythms of everyday life.

The colors of lacquer art are there to be admired. The fragrance of agarwood is there to be experienced. And the spirit is where these two values come together. This is the central philosophy of “Sắc Tâm 2026”, as contemporary art finds its place within Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám, a heritage site that has preserved centuries of cultural, intellectual, and Confucian educational traditions.

Artist Triệu Khắc Tiến, speaking on behalf of the 19 participating artists, expressed his appreciation for the natural harmony between lacquer art and agarwood. He noted that the “Sắc Tâm” exhibition also reflects the dedication of Nguyen Art Gallery to connecting artists with collectors and the wider public, while introducing the diversity of Vietnamese fine arts, particularly lacquer art, to audiences both at home and abroad.

By bringing together lacquer art, agarwood, and a historic heritage setting, the exhibition offers visitors a multisensory artistic experience: appreciating the colors, materials, and intricate details of the artworks, experiencing the fragrance of agarwood, and finding moments of stillness amid everyday life. In doing so, the exhibition creates new connections between traditional cultural values and contemporary life through the artistic language of today.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Hoàng Văn Hưởng, Founder of Trầm Tuệ, expressed his hope that artists would continue to draw creative inspiration from the setting of the 950th anniversary of Quốc Tử Giám, a place that has long honored intellectual achievement and Vietnam's tradition of valuing education.

He also remarked: “Within the heritage setting of Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám, the fragrance of agarwood is not merely a beautiful cultural tradition. It also evokes spiritual values that help cultivate character, inspire creativity, nurture wisdom, and uphold the dignity of the Vietnamese people.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Lê Xuân Kiêu, Director of the Center for Scientific and Cultural Activities of Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám, shared:

“We deeply appreciate and are moved by the nearly year-long creative journey of the artists, whose dedication has brought a special cultural and artistic event to Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám. The exhibition is particularly meaningful as part of the activities commemorating the 950th anniversary of the founding of Quốc Tử Giám, a place that embodies Vietnam's longstanding tradition of valuing education and honoring talent. We hope to continue creating more spaces for artistic expression, where artists can meet, create, and showcase their works at Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám.”

The second edition of the “Sắc Tâm 2026” exhibition runs from October 3 to October 18, 2026, at Tiền Đường Hall, Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám, 58 Quốc Tử Giám Street, Hanoi.
