EXHIBITION: “THE ORIGINS OF CONFUCIAN LEARNING”

Located in the Rear Hall (Hậu Đường) of the Thái Học Courtyard at Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám, the exhibition “The Origins of Confucian Learning” presents the formation and development of Vietnam’s Confucian educational tradition while honoring the distinguished scholars and historical figures who laid the foundation for the nation’s enduring respect for learning and talent.

Featuring more than 300 documents, photographs, and artifacts, the exhibition offers visitors a comprehensive and insightful overview of educational philosophy and Confucian scholarship throughout Vietnam’s monarchical history.

The exhibition is organized chronologically into four main thematic sections, highlighting the lives, achievements, and contributions of prominent rulers and educators who played significant roles in shaping the country's educational system. These include Emperor Lý Thánh Tông, Emperor Lý Nhân Tông, Emperor Lê Thánh Tông, and the renowned teacher Chu Văn An, as well as other notable historical figures such as Royal Consort Ỷ Lan and the distinguished scholar Lê Văn Thịnh.

Through these historical narratives, visitors gain a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s long-standing tradition of valuing talent, promoting education, and fostering national prosperity through knowledge and learning.

The exhibition employs a variety of display methods, combining historical documents, reconstructed models, and interactive experiences. Traditional materials such as bamboo and wood are used throughout the exhibition space, creating an atmosphere that is both simple and culturally rich. In addition, the color scheme is inspired by the aesthetics of Vietnam’s feudal dynasties, evoking the solemn and scholarly ambiance of traditional educational institutions.

“The Origins of Confucian Learning” is more than a historical exhibition; it serves as a bridge connecting contemporary audiences with Vietnam’s enduring tradition of scholarship. Through stories of enlightened monarchs, esteemed educators, and accomplished scholars, the exhibition celebrates the values of learning, virtue, and talent that have shaped Vietnamese society for centuries. It also inspires visitors to appreciate the nation’s rich cultural heritage and encourages future generations to pursue knowledge, self-cultivation, and lifelong learning.
