THE WORLD OF KYOGEN COMEDY AND NOHGAKU MASK EXHIBITION AT THE TEMPLE OF LITERATURE – NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam, the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam, in collaboration with the Center for Scientific and Cultural Activities Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám, is organizing a traditional Kyogen comedy performance from May 10 to May 12, 2023 (Wednesday to Friday) at the historical site of the Temple of Literature – National University. Additionally, an exhibition featuring 20 Nohgaku mask artworks created by the Kyogen artist OGASAWARA Tadashi will be displayed at Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám during the same period.

Kyogen is the first form of comedy that originated in Japan with a rich tradition spanning 650 years of history. This traditional art form of Japan is proudly recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage.

In this program, alongside an overview of the history and characteristics of Kyogen comedy, artist OGASAWARA Tadashi will present a performance titled "Bonsan" to the audience.

The play is set in the era when Bonsai tree appreciation was popular. A man acquaints himself with a wealthy collector of Bonsai trees, who adamantly refuses to part with even a single pot. One night, the man decides to sneak into the collector's mansion to steal a tree. As he is contemplating and choosing a Bonsai, the homeowner discovers him, rushes over, and raises an alarm. The man, quick-witted, promptly hides himself in the shadow of the Bonsai pot...

Furthermore, alongside the Kyogen comedy performance, the 20 Nohgaku mask artworks created by Kyogen artist OGASAWARA Tadashi will also be exhibited during the same period at Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám. Visitors can freely explore the Nohgaku mask exhibition from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on the days of the program. Audience members attending the Kyogen comedy can also view the exhibition before and after the performance.
