DECODING HISTORICAL FIGURES THROUGH THE HERITAGE EDUCATION PROGRAM "A PROLEGOMENON TO THE TRADITION OF EDUCATION IN VIETNAM" AT VAN MIEU - QUOC TU GIAM

On the morning of April 14, 2025, third-grade students from Vinschool Ocean Park Primary School in Hanoi had the opportunity to visit and experience the heritage education program titled “A Prolegomenon to the tradition of Education in Vietnam" at the Special National Special Relic Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam.

The program was designed as an engaging game on iPads and smartphones, guiding students through the exhibition space “A Prolegomenon to the tradition of Education in Vietnam” as they completed a series of exciting challenges.

Through these interactive activities, the students learned about four iconic figures in the history of Vietnamese education: King Ly Thanh Tong, King Ly Nhan Tong, King Le Thanh Tong, and the renowned teacher Chu Văn An — the foundational figures who established Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam and made significant contributions to the country’s educational and examination systems.

Alongside their journey into history, the students also got hands-on experience in traditional book-making: twisting Dó paper into thread to bind book spines, decorating and completing their own handmade books at the Doctoral Steles Garden. Each finished product became a unique keepsake, allowing students to preserve heritage values lively and creatively.

Sharing about the program, student Vu Hoang Bao Anh from class 3A4 excitedly said:

“I really enjoy learning about Vietnamese historical figures. Today, my group discovered the name of King Ly Thanh Tong during the game, and I even got to make my very own book from Dó paper, with King Ly Thanh Tong on the cover!”

Bao Nguyen also expressed her excitement: “This was my first time visiting Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam. I loved the experience because we got to play and learn at the same time, and I found out how to twist Dó paper into thread to bind books. I hope I can come back here many more times!”

The heritage education theme “A Prolegomenon to the tradition of Education in Vietnam” uses smart applications to help students actively and enjoyably access information in a more engaging and approachable way. The game encourages observation, reading comprehension, and content retention. More importantly, it helps build habits of exploring and appreciating museums and historical sites, laying an essential foundation for fostering a love for national history and culture from a young age.
