OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION "DIALOGUE WITH JAPANESE UKIYO-E WOODBLOCK PRINTS" AT VĂN MIẾU – QUỐC TỬ GIÁM
On the morning of January 23rd, at the Thái Học House, within the historical site of Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám, the opening ceremony of the exhibition "Dialogue with Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints" took place. The exhibition is organized by the Center for Scientific and Cultural Activities Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám in collaboration with a group of young artists under the project "From Tradition to Tradition" and the Japan Foundation.
The exhibition showcased 38 artworks created by 34 young artists. The pieces reflect distinctive aspects of Vietnamese cultural and daily life, offering a mix of familiarity and novelty through contemporary perspectives and personal creations inspired by the exquisite features of Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, combined with the artistic traditions of Vietnam, such as silk, lacquer, handmade paper, and bamboo paper.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Lê Xuân Kiêu – Director of the Center for Scientific and Cultural Activities Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám said: "The exhibition 'Dialogue with Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints' is highly special. Each artwork in the exhibition engages in a dialogue, a conversation between two cultures related to content, expression methods, and materials; creating a connection between Vietnamese and Japanese cultures. It is hoped that the exhibition will be a special gift for the residents of the capital and visitors during the Tet holiday, continuing the emotional flow for Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám to become a creative space, a gathering place for creative groups and individuals, fostering new values within the context of contemporary life."
Sharing more about the exhibition, Dr. Nguyễn Thế Sơn - Exhibition Curator, said: " 'Dialogue with Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints' is the result of relentless efforts by young artists on the journey of promoting artistic practice, drawing inspiration from the traditional cultural and artistic values of Vietnam as well as other cultures. The practical activity of 'creative tradition' is also a motivation for creative endeavors that leave a personal mark, contributing to encouraging the younger generation in general, and young artists in particular, to continue learning, inheriting the essence of traditional art, thus gaining motivation and inspiration to nurture their artistic passion."
The exhibition contributes to promoting the beauty and uniqueness of traditional artistic materials in Vietnam to a wide audience of traditional art enthusiasts, especially the younger generation and international visitors.
The exhibition will run until March 12, 2024, at Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám.
