THE OLD MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL
Just a few more days until the Mid-Autumn Festival arrives. The atmosphere of the Mid-Autumn Festival is already vibrant everywhere, from rural villages to every street. Hàng Mã Street in Hanoi has become colorful with all kinds of toys and Mid-Autumn Festival decorations. The Mid-Autumn Festival today has changed compared to the past.
In the past the Mid-Autumn Festival was the Children's Festival. On this day, families usually prepare a tray to worship the ancestors. In the evening families usually prepare a tray including mooncakes and various colorful fruits, dyed in vibrant colors like green, red, white, and yellow to admire the full moon. City girls showcased their skillful hands by carving papayas into flowers and crafting dough to shape shrimp and fish, making them look very impressive.
Children's Mid-Autumn Festival toys were typically made of paper, such as elephants, horses, lions, dragons, unicorns, shrimp, fish, grasshoppers, fireflies, flower branches, lanterns, or iron toys...
On that evening, children gathered to play tug-of-war, parade with lanterns, watch lion dance, and sing folk songs. The sound of drums, the melodious notes, and the joyful laughter echoed throughout the streets. The folk songs dates back to the time of Nguyễn Huệ. When he led his troops to the North, many soldiers felt homesick. He came up with a way for them to interact as if they were young boys and girls singing to each other to ease their homesickness, drumming provided the rhythm.
The upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival is here, and we wish all the children a happy and joyful Mid-Autumn Festival season.
